OI Update reports new version of apps available when there aren't any

What could cause OI Update to think a new version of an app is available, but when I go to download, the date listed for the app is days or weeks old. It's not happening for all apps, but several.

For example, OI Update gives me notifications every 2-3 days (it seems) that BistroMath has changed, but when OI Update takes me to AndAppStore.com, the date on the downloadable is 10/23/08.

Older version

The problem may be that your version (from the Market) is newer than the one available on AndAppStore, and the developer of BistroMath has not provided a custom version file.

The next update of OI Update will contain a filter so that "version upgrades" to older versions are suppressed.

The main root of the problem is that the Market does not provide any APIs to detect the version number currently available in the Market, so we depend on third-party developers to provide that information properly: Either they keep the versions in the Market and on AndAppStore in sync, or they provide a separate version information file.

You may write to the developer of BistroMath to support OI Update actively, then this should solve the problem.

For now, you can also select "Ignore this update". Then you will not receive any more notifications for this update, but a notification if there is yet another version available.

Follow-up and problems with OI Notepad, OI Shopping List updatin

Hi Peli,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'll contact the author of BistroMath and the other apps and bring the problem to their attention.

I wonder if you could help me figure out why I'm having a problem with OI Notepad (1.0.1) and OI Shopping List (1.0.2). I received OI Update notifications today saying both of these apps were updated, yet when I leave the update option at the default of "Perform update now!" and click on OK, I'm presented with what I call "the app Market screen" that shows the download statistics, description, rating and comments. At the bottom are the two buttons Open and Uninstall. Normally when an app is updated and I go to its Market screen, there's only one button at the bottom and that's Install.

So I don't seem to be able to get the updated versions of OI Notepad/Shopping List. Any ideas on what I could try?

Can you check which versions

Can you check which versions you have currently installed? (You can find this information in menu / "About").

If you already have the latest versions (OI notepad 1.0.1 and shopping list 1.0.2), then there may be another bug in our application, and you should not have received the notification.

If you have earlier versions (1.0.0 and 1.0.1), then the problem is with the Market, which is out of our control.

You could of course uninstall the applications and install them again, but you will loose all existing data, which would not be good.

Let me know which version numbers you currently have, and which version number is displayed on your "app Market screen".

Version info

Hi again Peli,

I replied to this this morning but don't see it now so I'm going to redo my message.

On my G1:

OI Notepad 1.0.0
OI Shopping List 1.0.1

Currently on the app Market screent:

OI Notepad 1.0.1
OI Shopping List 1.0.2

So I guess this means it's a Market problem.

If you can let me know 1) where/how I should contact someone in charge of the Market and 2) exactly what I need to tell them so they can correct the problem, then I'll do my best to report the problem.

Android Market Help Forum

You could post your problem to the Android Market Help Forum (to the group "Technical Help").

Contacting Market

Thank you for answering my question #1. What is the answer to #2?

Contacting Market

I would write the following:

Title: "Can not upgrade applications from the Market"

"I want to upgrade the applications "OI Notepad" and "OI Shopping list" through the Market. Looking into menu / "About" of those applications, they list the versions 1.0.0 and 1.0.1, respectively.

If I open what I call "the app Market screen" that shows the download statistics, description, rating and comments, I see the versions OI notepad 1.0.1 and shopping list 1.0.2 listed.

But at the bottom are the two buttons Open and Uninstall. Normally when an app is updated and I go to its Market screen, there's only one button at the bottom and that's Install.

What can I do in order to upgrade to the newer version that is listed in the Market, without first uninstalling the application?

Is it a temporary problem?
Do others experience the same problem?"

Contacting Market II

Oh... I didn't realize it was going to be =that= basic a bug report. I was thinking you might tell me specifics of metadata and/or specific files on the G1 or Market that weren't being updated so I could go to bat for you. I know nothing of how Market tracks version info but I thought you might since you've written OI Update. Peli, I'm so sorry you had to take all that time composing your reply; it's 99% similar to what I would have written anyway.

Glad it finally worked

I'm glad it finally worked for you. Actually I took 99% of your posts and just put them together in the right order :-) So no need to worry :-)

Google isn't revealing any information about the internal workings of the Market to developers... unfortunately...

.

Huh, the problem with Market not recognizing the new version of OI Shopping List and OI Update seems to have cleared itself.

Application id

The issue was cause due to incorrect application ids in the version info file for the OI apps.
OI Update has directed you to the market page of version 1.0.0 instead of the latetest version.

We updated the ids in the meantime. The next version of OI Update does not consider the application ids anymore as it causes too much confusion.
